Frequently Asked Questions

We're Here to Answer Your Questions

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and it's natural to have questions. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive. If you don't see your question here, we encourage you to contact us—we're happy to help.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

Therapy can be beneficial for anyone looking for support, guidance, or a safe space to process life's challenges. You don't have to be in crisis to seek therapy.

Many people come to therapy for support with anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, relationship concerns, grief, life transitions, burnout, or personal growth. Therapy can help you gain insight, develop healthier coping strategies, and move toward the life you want to create.

What can I expect during my first session?

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We'll discuss what brings you to therapy, explore your goals, review relevant background information, and answer any questions you may have about the therapeutic process.

Our goal is to create a comfortable, supportive environment where you feel heard, respected, and empowered from the very beginning.

Do you offer virtual therapy?

Yes. We offer secure telehealth services for clients throughout the state of Maryland.

Virtual therapy allows clients to access care from the comfort and privacy of their own home while maintaining the same level of professionalism, confidentiality, and support as in-person services.

Do you accept insurance?

Safe Space Behavioral Health is currently in the process of expanding insurance partnerships.

Please contact our office for the most up-to-date information regarding accepted insurance plans, out-of-network benefits, and private pay options.

We are happy to discuss your options and help determine the best fit for your needs.

How long are therapy sessions?

Session lengths vary depending on the service being provided.
Typical session lengths include:

  • Individual Therapy: 50–53 minutes
  • EMDR Therapy: Extended sessions may be available
  • Couples Therapy: 75 minutes

Your therapist will discuss recommended session lengths based on your goals and treatment needs.

How often will I attend therapy?

The frequency of therapy depends on your goals, concerns, and individual needs.

Many clients begin with weekly sessions to establish momentum and support. As progress is made, some individuals transition to biweekly or maintenance sessions. Together, we'll create a plan that best supports your growth and healing.

Is everything I share confidential?

Yes. Your privacy is important to us.

Therapy is confidential, and information shared during sessions is protected by law. There are a few legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality, such as concerns related to safety or court orders, which will be reviewed during the informed consent process.

Do you provide EMDR therapy?

Yes. Safe Space Behavioral Health offers EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an evidence-based treatment approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic or distressing experiences.

If EMDR is appropriate for your needs, your therapist will discuss the process and determine whether it is a good fit for your treatment goals.

Do you work with couples?

Yes. We offer couples therapy for partners seeking to improve communication, strengthen emotional connection, navigate conflict, rebuild trust, and foster healthier relationship dynamics.

Our approach incorporates evidence-based interventions, including principles from the Gottman Method, to help couples build stronger and more fulfilling relationships.

What ages do you work with?

Safe Space Behavioral Health currently serves adults and young adults.

As our practice grows, we plan to expand services to meet the evolving needs of our community.

What if I'm not sure which therapist is right for me?

That's okay—we're here to help.

As Safe Space Behavioral Health grows, our goal is to match clients with the therapist who best
fits their needs, goals, and preferences. If one clinician isn't the best fit, we'll work to connect
you with another provider within our practice whenever possible.

How do I know which service is right for me?

You don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

During the consultation and intake process, we'll discuss your concerns, goals, and preferences
to determine the services and therapeutic approach that may best support your needs.

What if I've never been to therapy before?

Many of our clients are starting therapy for the first time.
It's normal to feel nervous, uncertain, or even overwhelmed before your first appointment. Our
goal is to create a welcoming and supportive environment where you can move at a pace that
feels comfortable for you.

There is no pressure to share everything at once. Therapy is a process, and we're here to walk
alongside you every step of the way.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. We offer a complimentary consultation to help determine whether our services are a good
fit for your needs.

This is an opportunity to ask questions, discuss what you're looking for in therapy, and learn
more about how we can support you.
